Two candidate forums, presented by PAVE, the Pottawatomie County Advocates for Voter Education, are coming up this week and next.
Candidates for the Dist. 26, 27 and 28 seats in the Oklahoma House of Representatives will be in the hot seats Thursday, Oct. 25, at Shawnee City Hall. The forum will begin at 7 p.m. in the commission chambers, with Ronnye Perry Sharp as moderator.
All six candidates have confirmed their participation: Democrat Patty Wagstaff and Republican Justin Wood in the Dist. 26 race; Republican Josh Cockroft and Democrat Randy Gilbert in the Dist. 27 race; and Republican Tom Newell and Democrat Marilyn Rainwater in the Dist. 28 race.
This forum will be broadcast live on Allegiance channel 30 and streamed for desktop computers at www.ShawneeOk.org/Live. Streaming is also available for iPad users with the UStream app (search for Shawnee).
The final forum before the Nov. 6 election will be Monday, Oct. 29, at Oklahoma Baptist University in Room 219 of the Geiger Center, and will feature candidates for the Fifth District in the U.S. House of Representatives. It will begin at 7 p.m., with Sharp moderating.
All three candidates, Democrat Tom Guild, independent Pat Martin and Republican incumbent Rep. James Lankford, have accepted invitations to participate.
At each forum, candidates will make brief opening and closing statements, and will answer written questions submitted from the audience and screened for relevance and duplication. Those planning to attend are encouraged to write out their questions in advance to help include as many questions as possible, although cards will be available at the forum so questions can be written there.
PAVE, the successor organization to the League of Women Voters of Pottawatomie County, is a non-partisan voter education group with several years' experience hosting forums. All forums are open to the public at no charge.
