Draft Parks Master Plan Public Meeting

The City of Shawnee is pleased to announce to all citizens of Shawnee that the draft park system assessment report is ready for their comments about its key findings.

As a reminder, the city hired a consultant team several months ago to assess the park system to analyze its strengths and opportunities for the future. The consultant team of Shafer Kline Warren and Dick Horton Consulting will be in town on Tuesday August 4th at 6:30 p.m. at the City Hall.

The report's key findings came from three sources: a) a public meeting with key stakeholders; b) responses from a statistically valid citizen survey of randomly selected households in Shawnee; and c) from the consultant's on-site tour of the park system.

Key findings from the assessment include:

.. There are too many parks in the system that require capital funding and constant maintenance for the budget that is available.

.. There is no dedicated funding source to support the park system for its operating and capital needs.

.. Restrooms, shade structures, and lighting are improvements that citizens prioritize as the most needed.

.. Kidspace and Woodland Park are the most popular parks.

.. Security concerns is the biggest reason that parks are not used more often.

.. Trails are the most highly requested improvement to the park system.

.. Adult health and fitness programs are the most requested program that could be offered.

Please come out and give your input.
